It is important to know when to ask for a Certified Translation and when for a Notarized Translation
- A certified translation means that the translator has included at the end of the translated text a signed statement declaring that the translation that has been done is an accurate and true representation of the original document. Certified translations are normally required when submitting legal documents with a court of law or with an authority.
- The notarized translation does not affirm the quality of the work, so it is not a measure of quality control. A notarized translation is where a public notary authenticates the signature of translator working for him, that swore an oath in his presence. Notarized translations are required in a broad range of situations where the authenticity of a document’s translation is deemed important.
When you hire a translator for a legal translation procedure, it is extremely important to be able to depend on a reliable outcome. If the translation isn’t accurate enough it can have legal consequences and can directly affect your rights. Legal translators must find equivalents for culture-bound terms, particularly those related to legal concepts, procedures, institutions and personnel, having in mind that states have different legal systems.
